Lego has been very busy

This is a picture of a fully functional, programmable robot with motors and sensors. The kit, which costs about $250 is the next generation of Lego's Mindstorm brand. I read about this a few months ago in Business 2.0 magazine. What is special about this (besides being wicked cool and reasonably priced) is the method Lego used to develop it. They involved the community of hackers that other companies routinely as ask to cease and desist. That is, individuals that create "unlicensed" accessories in the form of software and hard-ware add-ons. Not only did Lego embrace this group of hard-core fans. The next version will make hacking even easier since the software will be open source. Way to go Lego! I may just have to go out and buy a set. Read more at Gizmodo.

Computers that feel our mood

A good article about the hardware to detect a users mood. Once this in place, software designers can determine the right reaction. From a portal perspective, there is a lot you can do with this info. Content can be personalized to a persons mood. Think of all the services a large company offers its employees, this could help identify employees with depression, cruel intentions, or unhappy workenvironmentss. This would be an important tool in the next step to improve productivity by ensuring people have what they need to be happy and successfull. The site could ask, "Are you feeling ok? Would you like to talk with someone?" Bad moods that persist for weeks could be referred to HR for investigation - lest someone "go postal". Link: Computers that feel our mood
